As was largely expected, USC quarterback Caleb Williams was announced as the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday night. But he had to wait a few extra seconds before hearing his name called.

It first appeared as though, Marva Smalls, who serves on the board of trustees for the Heisman Trust, would announce the winner. After giving her speech, Smalls said, “I think our extraordinary finalists have waited long enough, we are proud to announce the winner of the Heisman Trophy is…coach, you do the honors.” With that, 1966 winner Steve Spurrier took the microphone. But while Smalls’ speech came to an end, the wait didn’t.

Spurrier milked the moment a little bit more. “Thank you, Marva,” he said. “And thanks for the privilege of announcing the winner — the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner. A lot of people think this is the most prestigious individual honor in all of sports — all of sports.” At that point, nearly everyone in attendance, including Smalls, Spurrier and all four finalists, began to laugh. Finally, Spurrier announced Williams as the winner.

The college football world largely enjoyed Spurrier getting the most he could out of that moment.

Obviously, the Heisman ceremony is a serious event. But it’s also a celebration of great seasons and something that should be enjoyed by everyone. If nothing else, Spurrier helped lighten the mood.
