The losing streak for the Tennessee Volunteers in Gainesville against the Florida Gators continued late Saturday night as Tennessee lost to Florida, 29-16.
There were several controversial calls in that game but the most controversial being when Vols head coach Josh Heupel called a timeout with seven seconds to go in the game.
It turned into a disaster and almost a brawl when Vol and Gators players got into a scuffle at the end of the game. Heupel explained the decision to call timeout.
“Timing of when it was, a chance to try and push one into the end zone,” Heupel said. “Obviously, at the end of it by the time of when it happened, we weren’t going to be able to have a full sequence of plays to try and get back into the end zone.”
Heupel’s decision may cost his players some playing time because they may be suspended by the conference for fighting.
It wasn’t a good look for a team that last year was the feel-good team of 2022. The Vols struggled against the Gators and couldn’t get the offense going at all until the end of the game and by then, it was too late.
It will be interesting to see if the conference will take action against either team.
