Urban Meyer Detroit Free Press

Former Florida Gators and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer had lots to say when it came to his two former rivals’ 2023 schedules.

Meyer dragged both the Michigan Wolverines and Georgia Bulldogs’ weak non-conference schedules this upcoming season.

In fact, Meyer thinks that the NCAA should do something about it.

“Real quick: I just also think the NCAA should mandate scheduling. When I see the Wolverines and Georgia’s preseason schedule. I just think with this 12-team Playoff, if I’m the head coach at Ohio State, I could care less about my preseason schedule, the non-league schedule,” said Meyer.

Meyer also added:

“Your object is to get in the Playoff. I just worry — Why would Ohio State play Notre Dame anymore? Why not play a MAC conference schedule to keep everybody healthy and get to ripping and roaring into a season? I think there are some shortcomings. Just for the good of the game, I hope. You should play a top-25 — I think you should play a premier school, a middle school and then you can play a smaller school. But I think that should be some kind of mandate.”

Both Georgia and Michigan are overwhelming favorites to make the College Football Playoff again and that’s largely due to their weak non-conference schedule.

However, both teams can also make the case that their conference schedules more than makeup for that. Georgia has to face South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, and Ole Miss, which all made bowl games last year. They also have to go to Auburn this year and play in the SEC Championship game more than likely against a ranked SEC West team.

Michigan has a slightly easier conference schedule than Georgia. They still have to face Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State at the end of the year, and then the Big Ten Championship. From the outside looking in, both teams have a cakewalk to the College Football Playoff, but in reality, who knows?
