Things didn’t turn out well for Vance Joseph the last time he worked for the Denver Broncos.

The former Broncos head coach got fired after posting an 11-21 mark in 2017-2018. But new Broncos coach Sean Payton hired Joseph this offseason to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Now back in Denver, Joseph told Broncos Wire he did not take it personally what happened in his previous stint with the team.

“It was a fair process,” Joseph said. “This is a league of winning, so when you don’t win, there is going to be change. It was never personal for me. I came here and I worked my butt off, but it didn’t work. I’m back now, and that’s my focus — playing great defense for Sean [Payton] and win games.”

Joseph, a former NFL defensive back, has five years of experience as a defensive coordinator with the Miami Dolphins and most recently the Arizona Cardinals. He’s happy to be back in Denver, because he loves the city and fans.

“Sean has been great, obviously,” Joseph said (via Broncos Wire). “To have the chance to work with Sean Payton was a good thing. I had some choices after leaving Arizona, but Denver is home. This is a great place with a great fanbase. We have a home here still. For me, it was home. [Even] outside of working with Sean, it was the perfect spot for me.”
