Canelo Álvarez has been considered by most to be one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world for quite some time now. However, it seems like he is at least considering his eventual retirement from boxing, and that seems to include a potential golf career in his future.

Alvarez is set to face off against British boxer John Ryder on Saturday. He will be defending his WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.

The upcoming fight is certainly at the top of his mind. However, he mentioned that he would like to pursue a career in golf after his boxing days are done.

“We’ll see,” Alvarez told DailyMail about a potential golf career. “It’d be amazing if I could make the (PGA) Tour. Fantastic if I ever got to play in a major. Almost everyone says it can’t be done because I started so late.”

Álvarez, a legend in Spain, has built a close relationship with Spanish PGA Tour star Jon Rahm. Rahm spoke very highly of Alvarez’s golf ability.

“Canelo is great at one sport and can be great in a second sport,” Rahm also told DailyMail. “It’s just not fair.”

Alvarez has previously shown off his golf skills on the PGA Tour level, previously playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2022.

Golf is obviously one of the hardest sports to get a grasp of and truly become an elite-level player. However, Álvarez’s unmatched dedication to boxing is certainly an element that can transition well to the sport of golf.

It will be very interesting to see if Alvarez eventually does try and go pro in golf. For the time being, he will have his boxing skills on display Saturday night.
