Jay Monahan is dealing with anxiety.

The oft-criticized PGA Tour commissioner detailed his abrupt exit from the tour for the first time this week. Monahan said that his personal battles kept him from maintaining day-to-day operations at the head of the tour.

Golf Digest wrote, “Monahan on Wednesday revealed that anxiety-induced ‘mental and physical health challenges’ precipitated his decision to take a leave from his day-to-day duties with the tour for slightly more than a month. He further admitted that it was not a certainty that he would return, but ‘I was fully committed to the process of coming back.'”

Monahan said, via Golf Digest, “I realized that I need to step away and deal with that and to develop the skills to deal with that going forward. Ultimately, you can’t wait when you’re in a situation like that, and I needed to deal with it. I needed to deal with it for my family and for myself. That was a very hard thing for me.”

Jay Monahan received profuse criticism for the way the commissioner handled the LIV Golf merger. Several notable Tour players bit back at the commissioner for his handling of it.

But that, of course, does not preclude having empathy for someone who’s dealing with this. So, best wishes to Jay while he manages.
