Rory McIlroy LIV June 4, 2023: Dublin, Ohio, USA; Rory McIIroy watches his tee shot on the first hole during the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Although he seems to be playing well, world no. 2 Rory McIlroy is dealing with a secret, he is playing with an injured back.

McIlroy revealed to the public that he hurt his back while he was stretching at home the other day. Yet, despite that, he is still very much in contention at the FedEx Cup.

“My right side always gets pretty tight, my rib cage, intercostals, lats, like, all the way down, right hip,” McIlroy said. “On Tuesday morning, I felt a little tight, and I went into my gym at home, and I just sort of foam-rolled and stretched. I went to grab something and my whole right side just completely seized up, spasm.”

This is not unusual according to McIIroy, his body normally tightens up towards the end of the season. He said he spent a few hours with an athletic trainer before he came to Atlanta and feels pretty good.

“I was at the bottom of a squat, a body-weight squat, and my whole lower back spasmed, seized up,” he said. “I couldn’t move. I honestly couldn’t address the ball this time yesterday. So to get to where I am today is good.”

McIlroy started off just a few shots off the lead heading into the weekend and was in seventh place.
