Cheeleader competes alone

Competition cheerleading is inherently a team sport, but when the teammates of Morrill High School senior cheerleader Katrina Kohel backed out of the Nebraska State Cheer and Dance Competition this month, she decided to take matters into her own hands, competing by herself.

The rest of Katrina Kohel’s small cheer squad of four athletes had to back out of the state competition at the last minute, Kohel decided that instead of backing out herself, she decided to compete alone.

“It was definitely out of my comfort zone,” Kohel told Fox News.

“This is not something I would normally do by any means, but I didn’t want to end my senior year on a low note,” she said. “I guess you could say I wanted to go out with a bang.”

With the help of her coach, Kohel performed a modified version of the routine without any of the stunts.

“We just had to take out all of our stunts and make it where the signs were able to be used [by] one person,” Kohel said. “It really wasn’t too difficult to change it, seeing as we already had a small squad.”

It’s certainly a unique situation, but it sounds like Kohel was proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone.
