The weekend series in The Bronx between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees didn’t go well for the home team. When it was over, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said as much, in no uncertain terms.
After the Red Sox won 8-3 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday, New York came into Sunday’s game hoping to avoid a sweep. While Sunday’s game was close, the Yankees couldn’t pull off the win and ended up on the short end of a 6-5 final score.
That was the eighth straight loss for New York. It also gave the Yankees a 1-8 record against the Red Sox on the season. And after Sunday’s game, Boone was in no mood to put a spin on things.
“They’ve kicked our ***,” the manager said, per Bryan Hoch, MLB.com.

Heading into June, the Yankees had a solid 34-24 record. But the summer months have gotten progressively dismal for New York. The Yankees went 11-12 in June, 10-15 in July, and now sit at 5-13 in August.
Despite that, Boone’s outlook (at least publicly) has generally been positive. Given how off-track the season has gotten, baseball fans were generally receptive of Boone’s brutal — and refreshing — honesty.

Boston is far from the only team that has had New York’s number this season. The Yankees have a winning record against only five American League opponents, including both the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals.
For much of the season, New York has been within striking distance of a playoff spot. But after Sunday’s game, the Yankees are nine games behind the Seattle Mariners for the No. 3 Wild Card spot in the American League with three teams between them. At 60-64, New York sits in the American League East cellar. The Yankees have not had a losing season since 1992 and have not finished in last place since 1990.
