As someone who beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 18, Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has a unique perspective on the disease. As a result, Rizzo has tried to use his perspective to help those battling cancer.

The latest instance came recently and involved a two-year old boy in Iowa who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month. Rizzo heard about the family’s struggle and donated $2,500 to the family wrote them a letter of support.

In the letter, Rizzo mentions that the family reached out to him about their 2-year-old son’s diagnosis. Rizzo referenced his own battle with cancer and tried to tell the family to stay positive. To help out also, Rizzo gave the family the $2,500 so they can focus on the important things.

The act of kindness picked up national steam after the family posted it on a Facebook page that was made in honor of their son. The page has more than 2,500 followers and a GoFundMe account dedicated to the family has raised nearly $10,000 in just 16 days.

Rizzo has reached out to a number of families and has participated in a number of fundraising ventures, including shaving his head with teammates and starting the foundation “Cancer Knows No Boundaries” with Jonathan Lucroy.

As the family said, it’s hard not to root for Rizzo.
