The Texas Rangers reportedly have had interest in two-time World Series champion Brandon Belt.
The team had “internal conversations about Belt, who played for Texas manager Bruce Bochy in San Francisco,” according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
Belt, who admitted the 2023 season with the Blue Jays, “could be the end” for him, spent 12 seasons with the Giants. He signed a one-year deal with Toronto and finished last year slashing .254/.369/.490 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI. Those 19 long balls were the second-most of his career.
Olney added that the question around the Rangers was how much money general manager Chris Young has available. The team also could reunite with top free-agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery who made a huge impact in assisting the Rangers toward the World Series in 2023.
The Rangers also lost Mitch Garver to the Seattle Mariners. He was the top offensive bat on the free agent market.
As far as the fit for Belt and Texas, it’s pretty solid as a Texas native and the team’s need for a DH, but part of that is dependent on the 35-year-old.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Belt said in October. “I don’t know. I just don’t know yet. It’s something I need to talk to my family about and see what their thoughts are on it and see how I feel about it in a couple of months, then go from there.”
