Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson couldn’t wait to call his parents and tell them he was called up to the big leagues. Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, his parents were busy.

In an interview with Cory McCarney of Fox Sports, Dansby admitted after learning the Braves called him up to the majors straight from Double-A, he phoned his parents to tell them the good news. Swanson’s parents didn’t answer, which he wasn’t happy about.

“I was mad at my family for not answering,” he said. “Called my agent and then my mom texted me and she’s like ‘Hey, honey. I’m at church doing some community service.’ I’m like ‘Mom, pick up your phone right now and call me.’”

To top things off, Swanson’s dad had a weaker excuse: He was shopping at Costco.

Swanson did reach his parents eventually, who were elated to hear the big news. According to Swanson, the call was emotional, as you’d expect from a kid telling his parents he’s achieved his dreams.

The Georgia native’s phone call was likely one of the best moments of his young career — even if it was delayed. Swanson followed up the news with two hits in his MLB debut on Wednesday. The No. 1 overall pick in 2015 is already giving Braves fans hope in a lost, rebuilding season.

Swanson was pissed at his parents for not answering because they had everyday obligations, and that’s hilarious. There was no reason for Swanson’s parents to think they’d have to wait by the phone, after all. Although in this case, sticking to routine means they had to delay hearing their son’s amazing news.
