The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants will participate in a historic matchup in the 2024 season.

According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, the Cardinals and Giants will play down in Birmingham, Alabama, for the annual ‘Field of Dreams’ game. But instead of playing in a cornfield in Iowa, the two teams will play at Rickwood Field. The site was best known when Hall of Famer Willie Mays played while he partook in the Negro Leagues as a member of the Birmingham Black Barons.

It’s a major shift from the last two seasons, in which they did play in that cornfield in Iowa. But it is true that the second act – Cubs-Reds – was less attractive than the first act – White Sox-Yankees. That game ended dramatically and about as well as you could ask for. The snappy decision to send the game elsewhere is a strong maneuver, as is finding a historic site down in the southern United States.

Of course, this will not be the first historic game that either team has participated in. The Giants played in Mexico this year against the San Diego Padres in a super fun weekend set. Meanwhile, the Cardinals will play the Cubs in London later this season. Neither team has been shy about making history before, and they’re primed to again.

The MLB world reacted to the Cardinals – Giants news.
