The St. Louis Cardinals have mightily disappointed in 2023. Through 76 games, the Cardinals have posted a 31-45 record. They are in last place in the National League Central Division. They’re currently 10 games behind the red-hot Cincinnati Reds. Being 10 out on June 24 is a sentence for trouble, but general manager John Mozeliak isn’t pushing the panic button yet.

Mozeliak told reporters that while he believes it’s clear that they have to do something, he isn’t thinking of a rebuild. “I would hope the Cardinals are not allowed to rebuild,” Mozeliak said via MLB Trade Rumors. Later, he said, “We know we’re not where we want to be, and we know we have to make some changes.”

The Cardinals have been one of MLB’s top franchises for decades. When Mozeliak says they’re “not allowed” to rebuild, he likely refers to their pedigree and success being the reason why. But the problem with that statement is that the club hasn’t always acted that way. Namely in trying to find starting pitching. While Jack Flaherty ranked as a top-line starter, much like everyone else this year, he’s struggled. Adam Wainwright is nowhere near the pitcher he was, either. These were all things the Cards could have addressed but ended up eluding. It doesn’t help that free agent signing Willson Contreras has also struggled.

So, the Cards might be a team to watch to make some moves. But don’t expect a full tear-down in St. Louis yet.S
