The St. Louis Cardinals released a major injury update on their prized off-season acquisition.

Three-time MLB All-Star Willson Contreras underwent tests after injuring his knee on Opening Day. Contreras sustained the injury during the Cardinals’ Opening Day loss to the Tontoro Blue Jays. St. Louis provided an injury update on Friday. The update revealed that Contreras suffered a right knee contusion and is listed as a Day-to-Day.

In his first game as a member of the Cardinals organization, Contreras was struck by a pitch. He wasn’t in the batter’s box. Instead, he was behind home plate and was hit by his pitcher, Jordan Hicks. Up 7-6 in the top of the eighth inning, the Cardinals reliever threw a wild pitch that drilled Contreras on his right knee pad. The 103 mph pitch caused the All-Star catcher to wither in pain, as he hobbled around in foul territory. Eventually, he was helped by a trainer off the field.

Contreras signed a five-year, $87 million deal with the Cardinals over the offseason, spurning the Chicago Cubs for their bitter divisional rivals in the process.

In St. Louis’ 10-9 loss, the 30-year-old Contreras went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but his unfortunate injury overshadowed his debut with his new club. It remains to be seen if Contreras will miss anytime as the Cardinals are off on Friday. For now, St. Louis has avoided the worst possible outcome with one of its star players.
