The Chicago Cubs are expected to be very active this offseason, and they’ve reportedly already set their sights on a big prize: San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto.
Chicago’s 670 The Score reports the Cubs are interested in the three-time All-Star. The 25-year-old slugger has one year of club control remaining before he becomes a free agent, and the payroll-heavy Padres likely can’t afford his next contract.
No one is going to sign Soto for one year, so his next team will have to be A) Someone that can afford his pending long-term deal, and B) A team that has the trade pieces to land Soto.
The Cubs have got the cap space and 670 The Score reports the Padres might even help pay some of Soto’s salary next year if they work a trade. San Diego is said to be especially interested in utility man Christopher Morel. The 24-year-old rising star had an .821 OPS and hit 26 home runs in only 388 at-bats this season.
The Padres would also almost certainly be seeking a top prospect or two as well, and the Cubs had the No. 4 farm system at midseason, according to MLB Pipeline.
MLB fans think Soto might be a good fit in the Windy City — if the Cubs are willing to make it happen.
That would require spending money

Let me be clear on this: I think the Cubs should acquire Juan Soto

“Cubs were involved, but felt the asking price was too high.”

I’m good with it as long as it not a farm killer! I’m thinking outside the top 10. That’s still better then most teams can do! I would go higher with a longer term deal in place obviously

Cubs are always “involved” with these big name players. They just never “close the deal.”

Lmao Ricketts isn’t spending that kind of money.
