As the MLB offseason gets underway following the Texas Rangers’ first-ever World Series win, award season has officially started.

Baltimore Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson has been named the MLBPA AL Outstanding Rookie.

The award is voted on by MLB players instead of the media, which is the difference between MLBPA Outstanding Rookie and AL Rookie of the Year. Since the MLBPA Outstanding Rookie’s inception in 1994, the MLBPA Outstanding Rookie has been named the BBWAA Rookie of the Year more than 80% of the time.

Henderson, who was also named a finalist for a Silver Slugger award, hit .255 with 28 home runs. He hit 29 doubles and stole 10 bases, as well. Henderson’s 4.6 WAR (Wins Above Replacement) led all AL rookies by far, with Oakland’s Zack Gelof in second place with 2.9

If Henderson goes on to win the BBWAA AL Rookie of the Year award, he will be the seventh Oriole to take home the honor and first since 1989.

Thanks in part to Henderson, Baltimore finished the year with 101 wins, their first time winning more than 100 games since 1980. They were swept in the ALDS by the eventual world champion Rangers, however.

Social media had a lot to say about Henderson’s honor.

One fan asked the Orioles to extend Henderson.

Former Orioles outfielder Adam Jones’ podcast account congratulated Henderson, sending clapping emojis.

Despite the team’s unfortunate postseason sweep, one fan is still looking forward to next year, saying, “Orioles Magic! Team is going to be amazing”

Just an extension wasn’t enough for one fan, who said, “Lifetime contract right now”
