The Jackson Holliday era for the Baltimore Orioles begins now.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the Orioles called up MLB’s No. 1 prospect on Tuesday. The infielder had been expected to get an early season promotion, and had already been one of the favorites to win AL Rookie of the Year honors.

Passan notes the Orioles are still eligible to receive a first-round draft pick from the Prospect Promotion Incentive if Holliday captures ROY honors, because he was called up early enough in the season. The incentive is designed to reward teams for promoting top prospects, rather than keeping them in the minors to limit their service time and delay their free agency.

Holliday will not turn 21 until after the season, but he’s already a complete package, with plus tools in every category, especially as a hitter. MLB.com’s scouting report notes, “It’s an easy argument to make that Holliday is the best pure hitting prospect in the game.”

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft has 15 home runs and a .948 OPS in 583 minor league at-bats.

A natural shortstop, Holliday will see time at second and third given the Orioles already have a young star at short in Gunnar Henderson.

Holliday’s promotion set X/Twitter on fire Tuesday night.
