St. Louis Cardinals superstar slugger Mark McGwire was one of the best hitters baseball had ever seen during his playing days, but his legacy has since been tainted by a steroid scandal. But he thinks the backlash is unfair.
During an appearance on the “Legends Territory” podcast this week, host A.J. Pierzynski asked Mark McGwire if he felt like the players from the steroid era of Major League Baseball were treated unfairly. And he made it message pretty clear.
“It seems like it. That’s what it is,” McGwire said on the podcast, according to Fox News. “I think I heard Barry [Bonds] say it the other day. There was no rules, there was no regulations. Believe me, trust me, if there was any rules in place, that stuff would’ve never happened. There was no testing. There no nothing.
“And I agree with what Barry was saying. That was the culture. That’s what was going on back in those days and whatever. I can personally tell you, for me, listen, I didn’t need to do it and I apologize for it. But there was a lot of [freaking] hard work that went behind all the [stuff] people want to give me to do what I did.”
These comments obviously led to plenty of reactions on social media.
Facts. Until people learn that steroids don’t equal home runs, this will continue. Players as far back as Mays, Aaron and Mantle used amphetamines and now they’re considered PEDs https://t.co/Rtpm1HoHo2

Him, Barry Bonds, and Sammy Sosa saved the MLB https://t.co/Ku011c0lBz

Mark McGwire & Sammy Sosa saved MLB & how does MLB reward them? By blackballing & turning their back on them & inducting Bud Selig, the man who benefited the most, into Cooperstown instead. The 2nd worst MLB commissioner ever gets rewarded for someone’s else’s work. Amazing. https://t.co/3mw5X9HOMO

Yes. McGwire, Sosa, and everyone else crushing home runs back then brought baseball back from the brink after the strike in 94-95. In a weird way, MLB and the fans kind of owe them https://t.co/r3GlzbRg7t

Bud Selig knew what these guys were doing and he didn’t care because the 1998 home run chase brought butts back into the seats after the 1994 strike nearly ruined MLB. He’s in the Hall of Fame. Make it make sense. https://t.co/vuEw7xqmo8

It’s clear that McGwire has support from baseball fans.
