Colin Rea

Colin Rea made his first start for the Miami Marlins on Saturday, and that will end up being his only start with the club (for now, at least). Rea left the outing injured after 3 1/3 innings, and the Marlins reportedly weren’t too pleased with that. They’re sending him back to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Luis Castillo, one of the four players Miami sent to San Diego in the Rea/Andrew Cashner trade.

Oddly enough, Chris Paddack, who the Padres acquired from the Marlins for Fernando Rodney in June, made just three starters for high-A Fort Wayne before going down with an elbow injury of his own that will require Tommy John surgery.

The deal still looks pretty good for San Diego: Cashner for Capps, Jarred Cosart, and Josh Naylor. Castillo, heading back to the Marlins, hadn’t pitched with AA San Antonio since the trade.

Every so often, a situation related to medicals in a completed trade like this pops up – we saw it in the Austin Kearns trade between the Nationals and Reds years ago, and also in the Brandon Lyon trade between the Pirates and Red Sox.

But seeing a guy get traded back to his original team because of an injury *after* making an appearance with his new team? That’s a new one. The Marlins will likely still be in the hunt for starting pitching over the next two hours, because Rea was supposed to help plug holes in Miami’s rotation along with Cashner. Now, they’ve still got one hole left open after sending Rea back to San Diego.
