Doubting that Max Scherzer is intense is like doubting that the sky is blue. But if anyone wasn’t sure, Scherzer showed off his intensity on Tuesday.

With Scherzer’s New York Mets hosting the Atlanta Braves, Scherzer was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning. Something might seem off there. After all, if the Mets are the home team, Scherzer isn’t pitching in the bottom of an inning. With the universal DH, he wasn’t hitting, either. So, what happened? Well, it gets funnier. Not only was Scherzer not active as a pitcher or hitter at the time of his ejection but he wasn’t playing in the game, at all.

Scherzer last pitched on Sunday. His next scheduled start is on Friday, after the current series ends. But being a glorified spectator didn’t do anything to dull Scherzer’s intensity. Far from it.

The reaction to Scherzer’s ejection wasn’t unanimously positive — but it was very close.

Despite Scherzer’s frustration with the strike zone, the Mets won the game 3-0 to complete a sweep of a double-header (they won 5-4 in Game 1).

While New York certainly doesn’t want Scherzer to make a habit out of getting ejected, the Mets and their fans have to like the passion of one of the team’s leaders. And if Scherzer is going to get tossed, doing so on a day off is about the best way to do it.
