The New York Mets got some news on when they can expect right-hander Max Scherzer back following an injury suffered on Wednesday.

Scherzer is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks due to a “moderate to high grade” oblique strain, the team announced.

Scherzer removed himself from Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth inning “due to left side discomfort.”

“Just felt a zing on my left side and just knew I was done,” Scherzer said on Wednesday. “When I felt it, I just knew there’s no way you can throw another pitch, so just get out of there.”

The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 87 pitches in that game and still notched the victory, improving to 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA this season, his first with the Mets following a three-year, $130 million contract signing in the offseason.

Pitcher injuries have become pretty commonplace for the Mets this season. Jacob deGrom is still out due to a shoulder injury suffered in spring training while Tylor Megill was placed on the injured list with biceps tendinitis after his first six starts.

Mets fans know the dread that comes with these kinds of injuries all too well. That seemed to be apparent in the reactions that cropped up following the news on Thursday.
