Heading into the 2023 MLB season, the New York Mets are on a short list of World Series favorites. But getting to Opening Day is proving to be a significant challenge.

New York’s superstar closer, Edwin Diaz, will miss the entire season after suffering a freak injury during a World Baseball Classic celebration. Two days after Diaz’s injury, outfielder Brandon Nimmo suffered one of his own.

The Mets were taking on the Miami Marlins in Grapefruit League action on Friday night. Nimmo was on first base when Danny Mendick came to the plate. Mendick hit a sharp grounder to shortstop, which turned into an inning-ending double play.

Nimmo slid into second awkwardly and took roughly a minute to get to his feet. Unlike Diaz, he was able to walk off of the field while putting weight on both legs. But he was walking with a clear limp.

Several fans and others in the baseball world couldn’t help but observe the incredible misfortune that the Mets have suffered only two weeks before the regular season is set to begin.

Nimmo is a solid presence in New York’s lineup.

In 2022, Nimmo played 151 games and took 580 at-bats. In that time, he hit .274/.367/.433 with 16 home runs and a league-leading seven triples. He was also the primary centerfielder for the Mets during the season.
