A play in Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels may be a perfect summation of what the 2023 season has been for the New York Mets.
This was not an error or a bad baserunning blunder. In fact, it was a nice play. But it also showed that even when the Mets do something well, they still find a way to leave people scratching their heads.
Angels right fielder Hunter Renfroe came to the plate in the sixth inning with one out and a runner on first base. He hit a sharp grounder to third base, which Jonathan Araúz picked cleanly. Araúz threw to second baseman Danny Mendick to retire Logan O’Hoppe at second base. Mendick then threw onto Pete Alonso at first to retire Renfroe, completing what was an inning-ending double play.
Only the Mets didn’t seem to realize the inning was over.

Baseball fans have shown their sense of humor with various Mets blunders this season. This was no different.

The Mets turn an inning-ending double play. None of them knew how many outs there were. 😂

We’ve seen different versions of this through the years, with players like Larry Walker and Benny Agbayani catching a ball for what they thought was a third out, only to realize it was only the second out after giving the ball to a fan.
But this seemed to be the entirety (or at least majority) of the infield and battery.
