Mets fans and others were somber on Tuesday after learning the news about one of their star players. Talented young second baseman Ronny Mauricio was expected to be a major contributor to the team this coming year. But unfortunately, it looks like he and Met fans will have to wait even longer to see him take the field.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Mauricio tore his ACL and will require surgery.

Martino made the post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday afternoon.

In limited action in 2022, Mauricio flashed potential. He hit .248 in 26 games at the Major League level. His bat still needs to make the trip with him to the bigs, as he finished with a wRC+ of just 80 and an OPS .643. But, these were just 26 games, so it’s hard to have a takeaway.

Mauricio has been in the Mets organization since he was 17 years old in 2018. The team’s fourth-ranked prospect has risen up the ranks in the organization over the years, and after an entire season in AA in 2022, he played 116 games in AAA before moving up to Flushing.

Suffice it to say, it’s a crushing blow to the Mets, their fans, and fans of baseball alike. You never like to see somebody get hurt, and you especially don’t like to when it’s the offseason.

The MLB world reacted to the terrible news.
