The New York Mets and pitcher Sean Manaea agreed on a two-year deal Sunday according to The New York Post. The deal also includes an opt-out at the end of the 2024 season.
The left-handed pitcher became a free agent this offseason after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco Giants where he was used both as a starter and reliever.
He finished his 2023 campaign with a 4.44 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 10 starts in 37 games and 128 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings. From August until the end of the season, however, those numbers improved. Manaea boasted a 2.87 ERA in that span and officially re-joined the starting rotation in September.
His fastball velocity also ticked up as well in 2023.
It’s expected Manaea will remain in a starting role for the Mets.
He looks to bolster a starting rotation that will possess José Quintana, Kodai Senga, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser. And that might appear to be it for the Mets.
The Athletic’s Will Sammon also made a note, citing people familiar with the club’s thinking, the team “seems unlikely to add another starting pitcher this offseason.”
Manaea was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the first round in the 2013 draft. While with the Oakland Athletics in 2018, he threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox, striking out 10 and walking just two.
