Michael Lorenzen is doing exactly what the Philadelphia Phillies expected him to do, eat innings and provide quality starts.

But no one saw this coming.

Lorenzen tossed a no-hitter Wednesday night as the Phillies beat the visiting Washington Nationals, 7-0. It’s the first no-hitter for Lorenzen, and the 14th no-hitter in Phillies franchise history.

The 2023 All-Star, acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, walked four and struck out five in his second start with the team. Coming on the heels of his first start, in which he allowed two runs in eight innings, Lorenzen has paid immediate dividends.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson pointed that out while toasting Lorenzen in the clubhouse after the no-no.

““Second outing here. Eight innings the first time, nine tonight. Welcome to Philadelphia!” Thomson said, raising his glass to cheers.

“Thank you for being so welcoming,” Lorenzen said. “It means a lot.”

Lorenzen threw a career-high 124 pitches, the most by a pitcher in a game this season.

Lorenzen’s wife, daughter and mother were in the stands for his brilliant performance. He got emotional after the game when asked what his late father would have thought.

The baseball world paid tribute to Lorenzen.
