As the MLB season kicks into gear, we’ve already seen a handful of teams lose star players to injuries.

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher and former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber is done for the season with an elbow injury. Former Miami Marlins top pitching prospect Eury Pérez is done for the year as well.

Things haven’t been much better for position players, either. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert will be out for up to two months with a hip injury and Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung is out indefinitely with a broken wrist.

Another former All-Star hit the injured list Tuesday, as the Boston Red Sox announced that shortstop Trevor Story will need season-ending shoulder surgery to repair the shoulder he dislocated in a game against the Los Angeles Angels last week.

Craig Breslow, Boston’s chief baseball officer, met with the media before Tuesday’s home opener to deliver the news, saying the surgery would be season-ending and discussing what Story’s absence will mean to the club, via ESPN.

“Very significant. Not going to hide from what he’s meant to this team defensively and had full confidence offensively that he was going to contribute as well with what he was able to do in spring training. I think fortunately he’s emerged as a leader of this team and there’s still going to be a way for him to positively impact it.”

Since signing a six-year $140 million contract with the Red Sox before the 2022 season, injury problems have plagued Story. He missed a combined 187 games in his first two seasons with Boston, dealing with hand and foot injuries in 2023 and a torn UCL in 2023. Story missed just 57 total games in his six seasons with the Colorado Rockies.
