Texas Rangers hat Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers may be the defending World Series champions, but they’re now facing a pretty brutal situation as the team will now begin the season with the majority of their starting pitchers on the injured list.

The Rangers were already going to be without starting pitchers Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle as both players continue to recover from Tommy John surgery, but now they’ll be without star pitcher Max Scherzer too as the ace pitcher announced that he will be out until the middle of the season after undergoing back surgery.

“Obviously not the best news, but nonetheless, we’re glad that we have a diagnosis and a solution,” Rangers general manager Chris Young said following news of Scherzer’s surgery, according to ESPN. “Max is recovering and feeling better already and we look forward to getting him healthy and back out there next summer.”

Obviously, this is pretty horrible news for the defending World Series champions, and the Major League Baseball world had a lot to say about it on social media as a result.

All three pitchers are expected to be ready to return to the lineup by the middle of the season at the earliest, meaning the team will have to find a way to win without them until then.
