Earlier this week, Curt Schilling controversially shared news that Boston Red Sox legend Tim Wakefield was battling cancer. And in a tragic turn of events, it sounds like the two-time World Series Champion has lost that battle.
On Sunday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox shared the tragic announcement that former pitcher Tim Wakefield died at the age of 57 as a result of his battle with cancer.
“Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield.
Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation.
Our deepest love and thoughts are with Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the Wakefield family,” the Red Sox said in a post on X, the social media website formerly known as Twitter.

It’s an absolutely tragic announcement, and the Major League Baseball community took to social media to offer their tributes to the fallen Boston Red Sox legend.
Well…this is heartbreaking news. A great person, great teammate, and great golfing companion for many of our playing years. I told him many times playing along side of him what a great competitor he is. Hugs to his family and extended family. Miss you pal. 😞 https://t.co/d4hGBksIFc

Played golf with Tim in July and he was the absolute man. So friendly to everyone told some amazing stories and was a pleasure to be around. Talked a bunch that day about his kids and how proud of them he was. Brutal news https://t.co/r20BAG5U6E

My dad and I traveled to probably 20 Red Sox games throughout my childhood.
Probably 95% of those games I swear to God, Tim Wakefield was the starter.
He is intrinsically woven into so many memories I have with my dad and our team.
Put 49 in the right field corner. 💔 https://t.co/BiZBPg77xv

😭 absolutely gutted. Wake was an incredible man and I’m blessed to have gotten to get to know him a little. My heart aches for his wife and children such a tragedy for anyone who had the pleasure of getting to know him outside of those lines. We will miss his presence greatly. https://t.co/LelZfq3QYO

Wakefield was named an All-Star during the 2009 Major League Baseball season and helped lead the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in both 2004 and 2007.
He is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame after an absolutely legendary career.
