Aaron Boone Yankees Ump Twitter screen grab

Over the course of his six seasons as the New York Yankees’ manager, Aaron Boone has never been one to bite his tongue — especially when it comes to the umps.

But during Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, home plate umpire Bill Miller wasn’t having it.

After Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt threw a pitch to Blue Jays centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier that was called a ball with one out in the top of the third inning, Boone appeared to argue the call. Miller, however, wasn’t having it, replying loud enough for the cameras to pick up: “You say something? I hope not.”

Boone proceeded to roll his eyes and say something back, although whatever the former third baseman said wasn’t loud enough for the cameras to pick up.

The humorous interaction provided some levity to what has otherwise been a disappointing season in New York. Laying claim to a 76-74 record entering Tuesday’s game, the Yankees sit six games back of the Texas Rangers for the American League’s third and final Wild Card spot with 12 games remaining in the season and are on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time in Boone’s tenure as the team’s manager.

The disappointing season has naturally led to speculation regarding Boone’s future in New York. The Yankees, however, have reportedly committed to retaining general manager Brian Cashman.
