Former Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade is seen by many as the best player in team history, revered by many in the state of Florida. However, Wade took issue with the state on Wednesday, in particular due to their state legislature and their laws that he views as anti-LGBTQ.
This has been a hot topic in the state of Florida, especially since the state board approved an expansion of what critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” laws earlier this month. The Board of Education also approved a ban on classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades.
Wade is truly a legend in the state. He even has his own county named after him in Miami when Miami-Dade County was renamed Miami-Wade County back in 2010.
However, he listed these laws as the reason that he does not live in Florida in an interview with Rachel Nichols on Wednesday. He detailed that his family “would not be accepted or feel comfortable there”.
“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” said Wade. “A lot of people don’t know that I have to make decisions for my family. Not just personal or individual decisions. Obviously the taxes are great, having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there.”

Wade’s transgender daughter Zaya Wade has become an advocate for youth LGBTQ rights at only 15 years of age, so this statement from Dwyane Wade certainly makes sense.
Regardless, it is certainly sad to see a legend in Wade at odds with the state of Florida after bringing the state three NBA Championships over his storied career.
