The Atlanta Hawks are currently a game under .500 and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, not exactly where they’d hope to be just two years removed from a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. And now it sounds like things have gotten so bad internally that they have considered the possibility of trading two-time All-Star guard Trae Young.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a report Monday morning around the neverending saga of negative news surrounding the franchise, whether it involves the front office, coaching staff, or roster.
Things apparently progressed to the point where trading the team’s star point guard was broached and became the focus of a serious argument between former general manager Travis Schlenk and team owner Tony Ressler.
Per Audacy, Chris Vivlamore, sports editor of The AJC and co-author of the article, joined Mark Zinno on Monday afternoon to discuss the fallout.
“Here’s what I can tell you from multiple sources,” Vivlamore told Zinno and 92.9 the Game. “I don’t know if it goes anywhere, but that has been discussed.”
“Having Trae [Young] in your organization presents challenges,” he continued. “We’ve seen some of them bubble out. We had an element in the reporting today that he didn’t even fly back with the team after a loss to Miami in the playoffs last year. That stuff is from a young player that needs to mature and I think there are issues with that.”
If the Hawks‘ season continues to deteriorate and they move even further away from their success two years ago, it might not be too hard to imagine them talking a bit more about blowing it all up and starting over.
