bizarre double play on base-running mistake by Florida.

Sunday’s Regionals matchup between the Florida Gators and the Texas Tech Red Raiders featured an extremely bone-headed baserunning mistake by multiple runners that were thrown out at home plate on the same play.

Both offenses struggled early on in this game, going to the sixth inning with neither team scoring a run. Florida has a great chance to take the lead in the top half of the sixth inning, but overly-aggressive baserunning came back to cost the Gators.

Florida had runners on second and third with no outs, with star outfielder and top MLB Draft prospect Wyatt Langford coming to the plate. Langford hit a slow ground ball to third base and third base runner Richie Schiekofer decided to try and score on the play.

He was thrown out and home, and the play only proceeded to get weirder. Langford then tried to take second base on the play and got caught in a rundown. This prompted second base runner Cade Kurland, who had advanced to second base, to try and score at home on the play.

It didn’t work out, as Kurland was also thrown out at home.

Many around the baseball world took to social media to share their reaction to this wild play.

This play couldn’t have gone worse for Florida. However, the Gators still made the best of what could have been a lost inning. The next six batters proceeded to get on base, scoring four in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
