As the San Francisco 49ers continue reshuffling their defensive coaching staff after promoting Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator last week, a former Pro Bowl linebacker has agreed to a deal to join the staff.

On Monday in an announcement on his podcast, KJ All Day, former Pro Bowl linebacker K.J. Wright announced that he is joining the 49ers as an assistant linebackers and quality control coach.

Wright, who spent the first 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco’s biggest rival, has not coached before but is ready to take the next step of his journey.

After a four-year college career with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Wright was selected by the Seahawks in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He earned a starting role early in his rookie season and would remain as Seattle’s starting right outside linebacker for the remainder of the 2010s, winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the team in 2013.

In 2016, Wright was named to his first career Pro Bowl after a season that saw him record a career-high 126 tackles and 12 tackles for loss. Wright is third in Seahawks history in tackles with 941, putting him behind Eugene Robinson and Bobby Wagner.

Wright signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 where he spent his final season. He signed a one-day contract with the Seahawks in July 2022 to retire with the team.
