When it rains, it pours. The San Francisco 49ers’ season ended in unceremonious fashion on Sunday. Their NFC Championship hopes were dashed almost as soon it began. All four quarterbacks they had on their roster this year sustained serious injuries. That includes sensation Brock Purdy, who sustained a serious elbow injury in Sunday’s brutal loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It turned out that Purdy had about as serious an elbow injury as you can get. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted, “Brock Purdy suffered a torn UCL that will sideline him six months, per source.”

A torn UCL is a very common injury in the world of baseball. In football, it can occur and even did earlier this season. Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen suffered a UCL injury that nearly rocked the boat big time. Allen was able to trudge on through it, but not all injuries are the same, of course. Given where Purdy was at his level, it would make no sense for him to risk further damage. But, he is seeking other opinions.

Schefter tweeted, “Brock Purdy is seeking second medical opinions about whether he needs surgery, per source. 49ers are recommending surgery but no decisions yet.”

Niners great Steve Young had wished both Purdy and Johnson well after Sunday’s defeat. Obviously, this twist isn’t a good one for Purdy, who roared onto the scene this season. Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft led the Niners on a memorable run to the NFC Championship Game.

The NFL world reacted to the terrible injury news.
