The San Francisco 49ers received devastating news during Super Bowl LVIII. Star linebacker Dre Greenlaw will miss the second half of the Super Bowl due to a torn Achilles.

This is horrible news for the 49er’s defense, who have so far shut down the Kansas City Chiefs in the first half.

It was a freak injury that happened when Greenlaw was stretching before getting ready to run onto the field. Just as he was about to enter, he tripped and fell. It didn’t look serious at first, but the cart was brought out for Greenlaw later on the sideline and then the team announced he tore his Achilles.

Greenlaw had 75 tackles and 1.5 sacks on the season, making his loss a sizable one for San Francisco. Chase Young, Randy Gregory, and Nick Bosa will have to pick up the slack for Greenlaw.

The 49ers defense have dominated the line of scrimmage so far in the first half. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been uncharacteristically off and the Chiefs offensive line has been manhandled, leading to a 10-3 halftime deficit.

But these are the Chiefs. They have come back from double-digits before in both of their Super Bowl wins, including last year against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even without Greenlaw, is still a tough defense to overcome. It will be interesting to see how the 49ers will cope without Greenlaw in the second half.
