The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that quarterback Brock Purdy has been placed in the concussion protocol.
While it’s possible Purdy could clear the protocol before Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, backup Sam Darnold will get first team snaps in practice and is in line to start that game.
Purdy suffered the concussion on a quarterback sneak during Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, taking a blow to the helmet from linebacker Jordan Hicks.

The second-year quarterback remained in the game, however, and didn’t begin showing concussion symptoms until the plane trip home.
The NFL world had plenty of thoughts on the matter, namely, how did the 49ers not notice Purdy had been injured during the game? And if Darnold starts Sunday, what will that reveal about the whole “system quarterback” knock against Purdy?
Brock Purdy is now unlikely to play Sunday vs. the Bengals based on this trend: No NFL player placed into concussion protocol this season has played the same week. The last player to be in concussion protocol who played the same week was 2022, when Kenny Pickett had a concussion… https://t.co/vYWBmhIkoX

Real question how does Purdy suffer a concussion in a game and not get taken out or evaluated during said game?

Technically the concussion protocol does allow for players to clear within 5-6 days. We just haven’t seen it happen yet.
If Brock Purdy practices limited Friday, then simulated contact on Saturday, he could still be cleared by the neurologist to play Sunday.
It’ll be tight. https://t.co/XEdnwj45hb

I look forward to hearing Sam Darnold MVP chants from all the Brock Purdy truthers when the 49ers win on Sunday https://t.co/MWJNALIXWD

Darnold will show why Purdy is nothing more than a system QB.

Darnold will be just as good as Purdy with all his All-Pros to carry him
