The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that quarterback Brock Purdy has been placed in the concussion protocol.

While it’s possible Purdy could clear the protocol before Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, backup Sam Darnold will get first team snaps in practice and is in line to start that game.

Purdy suffered the concussion on a quarterback sneak during Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, taking a blow to the helmet from linebacker Jordan Hicks.

The second-year quarterback remained in the game, however, and didn’t begin showing concussion symptoms until the plane trip home.

The NFL world had plenty of thoughts on the matter, namely, how did the 49ers not notice Purdy had been injured during the game? And if Darnold starts Sunday, what will that reveal about the whole “system quarterback” knock against Purdy?
