When the Indianapolis Colts selected former Florida Gators star quarterback Anthony Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft, they made it very clear that their plan was for him to play early in his career to allow him to develop as a player with live-game reps. But it seems like that plan has now been derailed by a season-ending injury.

According to an announcement by league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Networks, Anthony Richardson is undergoing shoulder surgery that will mark the end of his rookie season.

“#Colts QB Anthony Richardson is scheduling season-ending shoulder surgery, with multiple opinions believing it is the only way to fix his significant AC joint injury. Richardson is already on Injured Reserve and doing right by Indy’s franchise QB is paramount,” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

It’s a pretty major announcement regarding the health of one of the most high-profile rookie quarterbacks in the league, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media following the news.

We’ll have to see how Richardson bounces back from this injury when he returns to the field next season.
