It’s no real secret that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick prefers not to reveal too much to the media during his press conferences, and he was at it again this week when discussing the team’s current quarterback situation.

While meeting with the media on Tuesday, Bill Belichick was asked whether or not there was a quarterback competition between Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe heading into team’s preseason camp. And the New England Patriots head coach declined to give a clear answer either way, simply saying “everyone’s out here competing.”

“Everybody’s out here competing. All 90 guys. That’s what we’re all here for, to compete,” Belichick said according to Pro Football Talk. “Everybody’s out here competing. Everybody’s out here competing. That’s what everybody’s doing.”

Belichick was then asked about his relationship with Mac Jones, especially given reports over the offseason that the coach was shopping him to other teams. Belichick gave a similarly vague answer to that question, too.

“I think my relationship is good with every player,” Belichick said.

While it would certainly be a shock if Zappe was named the Patriots starting quarterback this year, it’s certainly interesting that Belichick is seemingly refusing to outright name Jones the starter, especially after everything that’s happened surrounding that situation.
