Before the New England Patriots play the Miami Dolphins this weekend, head coach Bill Belichick received huge praise. The praise came from perhaps an unlikely source: Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

McDaniel chatted with reporters on Wednesday during his weekly media availability. The Dolphins coach discussed Aaron Rodgers’ injury and the upcoming matchup the Dolphins have with the Patriots. But before we got there, McDaniel made sure not to leave without giving Belichick his due.

McDaniel said, “It’s amazing the orchestration of the defense is so consistent, so fundamentally consistent and sound. Very, very detailed. And the leader of the ship was at the same job when we were all like, ‘What’s an iPod?'”

Obviously, it’s pretty hilarious and objectively true. Belichick took the job in 2000 and found success right away. The Patriots won three Super Bowl championships in four years from 2001-2004. The first iPod came out in October 2001, just a few months before the Patriots’ first Super Bowl title, which came against the then-St. Louis Rams in a massive upset.

Belichick won three more Super Bowls and arguably coached the best team not to win a Super Bowl. In 2007, the Pats went 18-1, going undefeated until losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Simply put, Bill Belichick is one of the greatest coaches of all time. Even rival coaches will take the time out to respect that.

The NFL world had plenty to say.
