Bill Belichick? Fired?

The New England Patriots have achieved a lot of success under Belichick. They won six Super Bowls in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2017, and 2018. But a recent run of bad play has led some to think that the end could be near.

Jeff Howe, a Patriots insider for The Athletic, pondered the idea of owner Robert Kraft dismissing Belichick. Then, later in the day, NBC’s Peter King floated around the idea as well on the ‘Carlin vs. Joe’ radio show on ESPN Radio.

“The problem is I don’t think anybody knows because Robert Kraft doesn’t exactly open up to people, to other owners,” King explained. “I think he talks to his son Jonathan and I don’t know that he talks to many other people at all about what his plans are. But Joe, I do believe that Robert Kraft, although he is very, very, will always feel indebted to Bill Belichick. I don’t think he feels like Bill Belichick has a job for life. If this year is a debacle, I won’t be surprised if he considers making a change.”

King added that if the scenario plays out that Belichick no longer coaches in New England, he thinks Bill would still be interested in coaching. “He’s a very young 71, you don’t see any sign that he’s looking creaky,” King said. “To me, he’s 71 … going on 58, so, I’d actually be a little bit surprised if he, at the end of this year, if he leaves New England if he wouldn’t coach again.”

Belichick is a lifetime 330-169 as a head coach. In the postseason, Belichick is 31-13, with those six Super Bowl championships. He also earned two Super Bowls as a coordinator for the New York Giants in 1986 and 1990 under the legendary Bill Parcells.
