While the Buffalo Bills spent most of Wednesday cutting multiple players in an attempt to get under the salary cap before the start of the league year next week, they also made an addition to their roster.

The Bills will be bringing back 2018 Pro Bowl quarterback Mitch Trubisky to backup Josh Allen.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo confirmed the agreement Wednesday night, hours after The Athletic’s Tim Graham reported Trubisky and the Bills were in talks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released Trubisky on February 12 to allow the quarterback to find a new role before free agency started.

He spent the past two seasons with Pittsburgh, starting seven games and throwing eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his time with the Steelers.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Trubisky’s tenure with the team was rocky. He went 29-21 in four seasons as Chicago’s starter, throwing for 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions, and was named to the 2018 Pro Bowl after helping the Bears to a 12-4 record before the season ended in disaster with a missed Cody Parkey field goal vs. the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2018 NFC Wild Card round.

The Bears declined Trubisky’s fifth-year option, and in 2021, he signed with the Buffalo Bills to try to get his career back on track. He threw just eight total passes as Josh Allen’s backup the first time around, and it clearly made a positive impact on him as he’s heading back to Buffalo.
