Brett Favre is in the middle of a long legal battle against the State of Mississippi due to his role in a scheme that misallocated millions of dollars in state welfare money. And in a new twist, it sounds like the state wants Brett Favre to directly pay the money back.
According to a report from the Associated Press on Monday, Mississippi state auditor Shad White is demanding that Brett Favre pay back nearly $730,000 in welfare money that was misallocated.
“Mississippi’s state auditor filed court papers Monday renewing his call for Brett Favre to repay the state for welfare money that the auditor says was improperly spent on projects backed by the retired NFL quarterback,” the Associated Press reported on Monday.
White claimed back in 2020 that Favre improperly received $1.1 million in state money that was intended for Mississippi’s poorest individuals. Favre returned $500,000 to the state in May 2020 and $600,000 in October 2021, but a court filing obtained by the Associated Press shows that Favre still owes $729,790 due to interest on the original amount he owed.
“It boggles the mind that Mr. Favre could imagine he is entitled to the equivalent of an interest-free loan of $1.1 million in taxpayer money, especially money intended for the benefit of the poor,” White said in a statement Monday.
The Associated Press said that neither Favre nor his attorneys immediately responded to a request for comment.
