Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to a fractured ring finger, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Monday:

Commanders QB Carson Wentz is facing a recovery time of roughly 4-6 weeks and Injured Reserve is a consideration, sources tell me and Mike Garafolo. He’s currently in Los Angeles meeting with a hand specialist because of his fractured ring finger,” Rapoport tweeted.

The NFL world was quick to react to the news:

“The Carson Wentz roller coaster ride in the NFL was so much fun. His elite year in Philly was one of the best years of football I’ve ever witnessed. Sadly, through the ups and downs of his play, he has broken down too much and I think it’s safe to say the ride is officially over,” Jeremy Klump wrote.

“My rudimentary back-of-the-envelope math indicates Taylor Heinicke is worth 2½ points more than Carson Wentz. There is a lot of small-sample noise in that but I think Heinicke is an upgrade. Couldn’t get much worse,” Neil Greenberg said.

“Based on his 1,091 snaps last season with the Colts, Carson Wentz would have to play roughly 764 snaps to meet the 70% threshold, turning the Colts’ third-round pick into a second. Wentz has currently seen 422 snaps with the Commanders through six games,” Zak Keefer tweeted.

“Washington has not had its Week 1 starting QB play every game of the regular season since Kirk Cousins did so in 2017. That streak will continue this year with Carson Wentz expected to miss time,” Ethan Cadeaux said.

“If Carson Wentz goes on IR and misses at least four weeks, his revenge tour will be over (unless Commanders make the playoffs) That means Wentz won’t get to face the Colts in Indy or play the Eagles in Philly. Sad,” Scott Abraham wrote.

Wentz completed 12 of his 22 attempts for 99 yards in last week’s win over the Chicago Bears before leaving the game due to the injury. Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke is expected to start in Wentz’s absence.
