The San Francisco 49ers have made it clear since the end of last season that their future revolves around quarterback Trey Lance and does not involve Jimmy Garroppolo. However, here were are, days away from final roster cuts before the 2022 NFL season, and they’ve been unable to put together a trade for their former starter.
Either because of Garropolo’s shoulder injury, his age, or the rumors about his work ethic, there just hasn’t been a market for his services.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, barring another team’s quarterback getting injured, a trade partner for Garropolo “does not exist.”

“They’ve made it abundantly clear it is going to be Trey Lance,” Rapoport said. “Are the 49ers going to be able to trade him and his $20-plus million salary? My understanding is a trade partner, absent of some quarterback injury, does not exist.”
Jimmy G is coming off a season in which he completed 68.3 percent of his passes and garnered 3,810 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also led San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles Rams.
Will the 49ers suck it up and cut Garoppolo next week to create room on their roster? Or will they stick with him and hope that a trade partner materializes? We’ll find out soon enough.
