Chase Young recently signed a deal to play with the New Orleans Saints. However, it sounds like Saints fans will have to wait a little bit to see their new defensive end put his hand in the dirt.

Young may miss time to training camp after it was revealed that the former first-round pick will require neck surgery. ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter emerged Tuesday with details on the procedure Young will need.

“New Saints DE Chase Young, who signed his one-year, $13 million deal with New Orleans today, is undergoing a neck procedure that is expected to sideline him into training camp,” Schefter said. “The expectation is that he will return in time for the season.”

Schefter said that teams who pursued Young were aware that he needed this procedure done. That may perhaps explain the fact that it took until now for a team to sign him. Certainly, teams have shied away from players with injury risks or concerns. The Saints, obviously, didn’t feel like it would obstruct too much from the vision they had for him this year.

Nonetheless, don’t expect to see Young around the Saints until training camp arrives later this summer. New Orleans is Young’s third NFL team in his career, having played for the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers acquired Young in a mid-season trade last year, but ultimately parted ways with him this offseason and didn’t bring him back.

Young, a former Ohio State standout, had been viewed highly by scouts going into his NFL career. He’s yet to truly tap into his abilities, so it will prove interesting to see how his one season in New Orleans goes. Perhaps he could push it into even more in the Bayou.
