This season, the Kansas City Chiefs were just short of reaching another Super Bowl, falling short against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game.

Following this season, there could be some big changes that could certainly impact their team for the future.

The Chiefs extended star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a massive ten-year $450 million dollar contract back in 2020 that is set to kick in starting next season, so the team will have to make some tough contract decisions with other players going forward.

The Chiefs certainly made one on Tuesday, releasing linebacker and co-defensive captain Anthony Hitchens.

Hitchens has been with the Chiefs since 2018 and had 80 tackles in the 2021 season as well as an interception this season.

The Chiefs will save $8.4 million against their salary cap in 2022 with this move.

Part of the reason that Hitchens most likely became expendable to the team was their drafting of linebackers Nick Bolton in the 2021 NFL draft and Willie Gay in the 2020 draft.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had this to say in a statement on the veteran linebacker on Tuesday.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to coach Anthony over the last four years. He’s as tough as they come in this league and is a team-first player.”

“I appreciate the way he came to work, ready to do his part, but also his willingness to teach the younger guys around him.”
