Things did not go great for the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday as they lost the NFL season opener 21-20 to the Detroit Lions. Kansas City’s receivers, Kadarius Toney in particular, had an especially bad night. When it was over, they were roasted by an unusual source.

Nickelodeon tweeted out a GIF of SpongeBob SquarePants, with Patrick Star telling Squidward Tentacles to “firmly grasp it.”

Above the GIF was a caption, “Patrick Mahomes at practice tomorrow.”

Football fans took notice of Nickelodeon making fun of an NFL team — again.

The reality is obviously not what the Chiefs were looking for, it’s also not the end of the world. But the receivers were bad. Kansas City dropped four passes on the night. One from Toney directly resulted in a pick-six and was realistically probably the biggest play of the game. Another came later in the game, when Toney dropped a pass that would have at least put the Chiefs well within range to kick a go-ahead field goal late in the fourth quarter.

Certainly, it’s unlikely that anyone had “Nickelodeon mocking the Chiefs” on their 2023 NFL bingo card, especially after one game. That said, it’s well deserved. And it’s also likely that Mahomes will have a similar message for is receivers after Thursday night’s struggles.
