As NCAA March Madness has shown over the past few days, every little bit of time on the clock matters – even down to the tenth of a second. Given that NFL games often come down to the last few seconds, as well, one team is proposing a change to the clock that just makes sense to make sure every game has the exact correct amount of time.

This week, the Philadelphia Eagles have proposed adding tenths of a second to the way time is displayed in NFL games in the last 30 seconds of the second and fourth quarters.

Here is the precise wording of the Eagles’ proposed addition to NFL bylaws, according to Pro Football Talk:

“The game clocks will display game time in accordance with all NFL Playing Rules and will count down in one second increments except in the last 30 seconds of the 2nd and 4th quarter, when the clocks will transition to a countdown in tenths of seconds.”

As Pro Football Talk points out, however, this could be a bit of a problem for teams across the league as most teams across the league have fixed-digit scoreboard displays that would need to be changed ahead of the NFL season if this rule is instated. But it seems like it would be worth it.
